Oklahoma's Okay

One of the highlights of my week is day trips with Christina. One of the best ones from last month was when we headed to Oklahoma City to relax.

I love utilizing tripadvisor.com as a resource for traveling and outings. It also mentions attractions that are off the beaten path and unique. One of these unique attractions is where we stopped next - World of Wings.
This quirky place called "World of Wings" has a ton of pigeons that are used in racing. The small museum had some information about the history of homing pigeons and how they were used in WWII.
This antique collection of racing clocks was neat. Mostly, Christina enjoyed getting numerous drinks of water and looking at a preserved pigeon in a bottle. Kind of gross, but she seems to like that kind of thing.
Our next stop was a place that came highly recommended - Bricktown. It is patterned after the Riverwalk in San Antonio, but had some other unique features that made it so much fun.
The Bricktown ballpark is right in the middle of everything. I hope to take the kids to a baseball game sometime this year.
Christina and I grabbed some lunch at Sonic - in fact, the only indoor Sonic that I've ever seen. We learned that Bricktown is where Sonic's headquarters are located too.
I splurged on the boat ride (or water taxis as they called them). It was $8 for me and $2 for Christina. Our tour guide took a humorous and historical approach to the tour. We enjoyed it, although it was a little long for a 3-year old.
I love spending this one-on-one time with Little Miss.
Another great Oklahoma mural. I've seen so many brick walls with cool paintings on them since we moved here. This one showed the transportation history of Oklahoma City.
The river water is dyed green and is very pretty, with waterfalls, neat statues along the way, and cool bridges.
This set of statues depicted the famous Land Run.
When Missy Moo got tired, I browsed through my purse. Not much in there that day, but the hand sanitizer had to do. Christina ended up putting it on not just her hands, but her arms and legs too. She loved going under the bridges and shouting to make an echo. I bet the guide questioned his initial encouragement to do this, since she did it as we passed under ever bridge after that.
Bricktown has tons of restaurants and shops that we didn't even attempt. I knew Christina was getting tired of walking. Sightseeing is so fun!
We had a little extra time and we weren't far from the Oklahoma City Capitol, so we decided to stop by again and go inside this time. On our last visit, I had all three kids and they were wiped out.

Some fun facts I learned this day are:

The OKC Capitol is the only capitol with active oil rigs. In fact, it sits directly on top of the OKC Field. What fun to see oil derricks right on the grounds!

The first capitol was originally in Guthrie (see previous post about that particular outing).

Its dome was only built recently - in 2002.

We thought Texas was cool with its six flags that have flown over it. Since explorers first came to the New World, 14 flags have flown over the territory that became Oklahoma. Wow!

Oklahoma City was founded in 1889 during the Land Run. Its population grew to over 10,000 within hours of its founding.
Such a beautiful interior too
Christina liked this contemporary painting of a clown.
The capitol had guided tours and self-guided tours, using a written guide. I skipped both and asked an employee which floors she'd recommend us stopping at. We skimmed over the 4th and 1st floors and mostly enjoyed looking at the art exhibits and dome
Christina looked adoringly at this statue of Kate Barnard, one of the first women in Oklahoma to hold an elected state position. When we walked up to the bench, Christina did a double take to see if she was real or not.
The dome was especially stunning from the inside. What a fun day in OKC!
